“...a striking series of profound observations of the human condition, carefully curated by a truly compassionate filmmaker.” – International Cinephile Society
In this affecting drama set during the mass deportation of Georgians by the Russian government in 2006, Medea purchases a majestic apartment in St. Petersburg’s historic centre for a suspiciously low price. Unbeknownst to Medea, the sale stipulates that the apartment comes with its elderly owner, the opinionated, old-fashioned Vladimir. To complicate things further, Medea’s Georgian boyfriend Lado is on the run from Russian authorities, and takes refuge in the apartment alongside Medea and the unsuspecting old man.
Buoyed by the odd couple pairing of elderly curmudgeon Vladimir and the resilient Medea, director Rusudan Glurjidze's film depicts a dark spot in Russian history with compassion, focusing on small measures of kindness and solidarity which lend this carefully crafted and darkly surreal drama its power.
