“Astonishing, maddening, brilliant, hilarious, obstinate, and altogether unmissable.” - Indiewire

Young Israeli Yoav turns up in Paris hopeful that France will save him from the troubles and trauma of his home country. He refuses to speak Hebrew, and a dictionary becomes his most valuable resource as he walks the streets muttering in French. His mandatory visits to the Israeli embassy frustrate him and the French couple he is befriended by have strange ideas to help him assimilate. Yoav’s attempt to embark on a new life opens up an existential abyss full of secrets and tragedy.

Based on the personal experiences of the director and Winner of the Golden Bear for Best Film at the 2019 Berlin Film Festival, Synonyms explores the challenges of putting down roots in a new place.
